Celebrate Mother’s Day

I hope everyone who celebrates had a beautiful Mother’s Day. If you took a drive through the Adelaide Hills over the weekend, you probably noticed the roadside stalls were out in full bloom.

There’s something special about the way these stalls come to life for Mother’s Day – bursting with freshly picked flowers, homemade jams, hand-poured candles, and thoughtfully wrapped gifts. It’s a reminder that the Hills are full of creative, hardworking people who pour their hearts into every bunch, jar, and carefully written chalkboard sign.

Many of these stallholders are mothers themselves, balancing the chaos of family life with the demands of running a stall. They put in the time to trim, tie, and perfect their displays, often with little helpers by their side, all while making the Hills a little brighter for the rest of us.

Adelaide Hills Baking Classes

At Adelaide Hills Baking Classes, baking is more than just a recipe – it’s a connection to place, tradition, and each other. Christine’s love for baking took root in her mother’s kitchen in southern Germany, where ‘Kaffee und Kuchen’ – afternoon coffee and cake – was a cherished family ritual. It’s the kind of tradition where flour-dusted hands and shared laughter are as important as the cakes themselves.

After moving to Australia in 2000 for a research role in Adelaide, Christine and her husband, Tom, found their way to Uraidla – a pocket of the Adelaide Hills known for its cool-climate vineyards, lush market gardens, and the warm, earthy aroma of wood-fired ovens. They started baking for local markets, turning homegrown produce into rustic sourdoughs, buttery cakes, and the kind of homemade treats that remind you of simpler times.

Since 2022, small groups have gathered in Christine’s home kitchen for Adelaide Hills Baking Classes – a chance to slow down, get your hands into the dough, and share the simple, hands-on joy of making something from scratch. It’s not about being perfect or knowing all the tricks – it’s about rolling up your sleeves, creating something with heart, and sharing it around the kitchen table, perhaps with a glass of bubbles, before heading home, a little flour-dusted and full of new skills.

Little Women: The Broadway Musical
