Good Morning Hills Lovers. Some weeks in the Hills feel busier than others — and this one’s brimming with good excuses to get out and about. We’re talking cafĆ©s you’ll want to return to again (and again), eighteen of Holden’s most iconic machines gathered under one roof in Birdwood, and August’s annual art takeover as SALA splashes colour across our towns. Plus, the Ride Report from last weekend’s ride through the backroads in Meadows.

Let’s get into it.

TEN CAFES TO LOVE
And Why I Keep Coming Back

Some cafĆ©s you visit once. Others you just keep going back to. These ten spots around the Adelaide Hills have become regulars for me, some for the coffee, some for the food, some for a quiet corner or just because they always add a moment of enjoyment to my day. A few of these you’ll already know and love. Others might be new and worth checking out next time you’re on the hunt for a spot. Each one has its own reason I keep coming back.

1. Red Cacao, Stirling
If I’ve already hit my coffee limit, I go for the Aztec Hot Chocolate. It’s spicy and comforting and feels like a proper treat. My favourite place to take the kids too, the Monkey Plates are the best value around. A warm or cold drink, chocolate, marshmallows. Done. Here’s a map to get there.

2. Fred Eatery, Aldgate
I go here when I feel like something different for lunch. Their Asian-style dishes are full of flavour but still light. It’s not fine dining, but it’s definitely a step up from a sandwich. Familiar space, always good. Here’s a map to get there.

3. Cherry Bomb, Ashton
For cyclists, this one’s iconic. It’s the cafĆ© in the clouds after a big climb. I still order toasties, even though the menu’s expanded. Best spot is in the library by the fire. No kids. Just me. Here’s a map to get there.

4. The Organic CafƩ, Stirling
My favourite brunch meal anywhere—big call, I know. Confit mushrooms, thick Mylor Bakery sourdough, homemade hummus, pickled onions, rocket, feta, pesto. You can ask for it split across two plates, but I never do. Here’s a map to get there.

5. Lady Luck, Mount Barker
Right next to the bike shop. Across from the sports store. I stop in here often when I’ve got things to do. this place is convenient and reliable. The coffee’s always good and the atmosphere is upbeat. I’ve never eaten here but apparently the food is brilliant. Here’s a map to get there.

6. Fourth Hill Providore, Verdun
I usually get here via the back roads from Carey Gully down along Beaumont Road—one of my favourite rides. Good coffee, great baked goods, and an easy halfway stop if I’m out on the bike. There’s a nice spot out front for bikes and to sit outside. Here’s a map to get there.

7. Verte, Mylor
This spot is a local favourite in the Hills, known for housing some standout cafĆ©s over the years. The latest, Verte, might just be the best yet. If I’m not riding, I’ll often stop in to grab a loaf of Mylor Bakery’s fruit bread. It’s so packed with fruit, it feels like lifting a brick. The caramel slice is hands down my favourite, and I always order an iced chocolate here. It’s just my thing. Here’s a map to get there.

8. Emma & Ivy, Lobethal
I get the same thing every time—a soy latte with honey and the natural caramel slice. The honey comes in a little jar I always mean to bring back but never do. Lobethal’s one of my favourite towns. Still peaceful, even as it grows. Here’s a map to get there.

9. Atelier, Crafers
Art, live music, a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great place to spend a few hours without rushing. I love it for the slower days. Here’s a map to get there.

10. The Plough, Echunga
Homey, handmade food with a bit of Irish heart. Their chowder is excellent. It’s in the old Institute building, right near some beautiful hikes around the old mines. A proper day out cafĆ©. Here’s a map to get there.

ā˜• That’s my list. Just simply great placed that I keep coming back to. If you’ve got your own cafĆ© rituals in the Hills, I’d love to hear them and maybe check them out myself. Email me your favourite spots at [email protected]

HOLDEN HEROES
Eighteen Icons, One Roof

If you grew up with Holden in your driveway, this is your moment. For the first time ever, 18 of Holden’s most important vehicles will be showcased under one roof at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood.

Holden Heroes: 1948 to 2017 brings together some of the rarest, boldest, and most celebrated machines from Holden’s Heritage Collection. Expect to be wowed by the futuristic Hurricane (1969), the striking Torana GTR-X (1970), and the brave, custom-built EFIJY (2005). You’ll also meet the car that started it all – the 1948 Number One Holden – and the final chapter in local manufacturing, a VF Commodore Series II SS Redline (2017). Rounding it out is a line-up of ā€˜millionth’ milestone vehicles that mark Holden’s place in our motoring history.

This landmark exhibition, created in partnership with General Motors, is a rare chance to see these icons in one place. While Holden’s wider Heritage Collection is spread across museums nationwide, Birdwood is the only spot where these 18 legends share the stage.

Whether you’re a lifelong Holden devotee or simply love a dose of Australian history, this is an unmissable trip down memory lane – right here in the Adelaide Hills.

SALA IN THE HILLS
A Celebration of Art Across the Region

Every August, the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival takes over the Hills, filling our towns with colour and creativity. This year, more than 40 exhibitions will pop up across the region – from Hahndorf to Birdwood, Stirling to Oakbank – in cafĆ©s, cellar doors, libraries, community spaces, and yes, even the aisles of Foodland.

Now in its 26th year, SALA celebrates South Australian artists of every kind – emerging talent, big names, and everyone in between – working in painting, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, and more.

There’s plenty to explore. See Eliza Piro’s vibrant Bold, Spirited and Beautiful! in Echunga. Step into the reflective Green Thoughts at Stirling’s Old School Community Garden. Wander the moving Labours of the Land at Murdoch Hill in Oakbank. Or visit Hahndorf Academy for Family Silver – Out of India and Drawing Groundwater, where history and environment take centre stage.

For those who love to meet the Artists, Robin Eley is opening his Crafers West studio for the first time, and Hayden Hunt’s rustic steel sculptures are waiting in Woodside.

It’s not just for adults, either – Aldgate, Mylor, and Heathfield primary schools are all showcasing their young artists, alongside community projects like Whispers of Creation at Mt Barker Library.

Whether you map out your must-sees or simply stumble across something between coffee stops, SALA brings August in the Hills to life. See the full SALA guide here and filter for the Adelaide Hills.

Written By: Ride Leader Brendan
After a week of soaking rain, you’d expect mud, puddles, and a slow grind through the backroads. Instead, the July CafĆ© Ride delivered the opposite — a lush winter loop through Meadows, Kuitpo, and Macclesfield, complete with flowing creeks, brimming dams, and trails that somehow stayed rideable despite the skies.

Four riders set out from Pik-A-Pie under a moody drizzle, banana caramel pie already pencilled in as the reward. A warm welcome went to new rider Jim, who joined as the group rolled straight into Kuitpo Forest. On Red Gum Road, Nikki took the lead, guiding us through a series of shimmering ponds that looked more like lakes than lanes. By the halfway point at Macclesfield General Store, coffee was essential, and yes — the pie was purely medicinal.

The return leg brought wide-open Hills views and a little tactical rerouting to dodge slick clay. A growing headwind and one slightly fatigued host (note to self: late-night Tour de France binges have consequences) slowed the pace, but spirits stayed high.

The highlight? The sweeping descent down Philips Hill Road — pure Hills magic with a Tour-worthy feel — before Nicol Road carried us back to the forest. A final stretch of gravel between Prospect Hill and Meadows, a downed tree demanding a short hike-a-bike, and dappled winter light sealed the day.

We rolled back into Pik-A-Pie muddy, hungry, and smiling. Legs a little weary, spirits full — proof that even in mid-winter, the Hills always deliver.

Next ride: August 31st, always the last Sunday of the month. Coffee and cake guaranteed.
